I started taking portraits for Leah and Ben even before the girls were born.
I have documented a lot of different things for this family. For Hazel's 5th birthday, Leah decided we needed to do something a little bit different.
Time is flying and these girls are growing up way too fast. We wanted to capture some natural moments, doing what they do every Saturday morning. Spending time in their amazing playroom, and baking with Mom.
Leah was totally prepared, and had a great set up, complete with birthday cake and strawberries!
Chelsey and Michael met up with me at Pumpkin Run in Rices Landing the other day for their engagement session. We were lucky to have one of the warmer days March has offered us...
Not all of my images look the same...some are dark and moody, others are bright and bold.
I like to edit to the feel of the image.
You're planning your wedding, and it's super exciting!
I bet you had no idea you'd be so worried about napkins or that you'd have to distinguish between 50
shades of purple (eggplant, liliac, royal...). There is a lot to be done, and I'm hoping I can help with a little
bit of your planning by telling you what your photographer wants you to know!
We take our jobs very seriously. We have the privilege of preserving all the memories and details from one
of the most important days of your life! This is a career for me, and I have over 6 years of experience. I have
captured nearly 250 love stories! Every one is unique and so much fun! Make your wedding yours, it is
something you have been looking forward to for a long time. Think about the things that will last, what you
can pass on to your children to show them how it all began.
This day is the beginning of your new life.
Now on to the day itself:
Some brides love the getting ready photos, while others don’t think they are necessary. This is totally your
choice. Personally, I think they are great. It’s a good way to get used to the camera being around,
and we are sure to get some great candid shots. Especially if you have the kiddos in the room! They
are usually a little wary of having a camera follow them around, and it's a good idea for them to get
to know us a bit!
Be sure to choose a locations with plenty of windows, like a home or a hotel room. Natural light does
everyone more favors than harsh fluorescent lights do. I bet your make up artist will agree!
We like to take detail shots at this time, like your dress (wooden hangers look way better than the plastic
ones!) and jewelry and shoes. Have that stuff set aside for us, as well as anything else that is special to you.
Also, have your girls designate a corner or a wall for their stuff so we aren’t moving it all around when
it’s in the background.
There is a good chance your hair and make up is going to take a bit longer than you expect it to. Prepare for
Everyone is going to need your attention for something while they are getting ready.
You don’t want to wait until the last minute to put your dress on. You may need last minute adjustments,
and we need portraits. Head shots prior to the wedding are a big plus.
We want to spend some time with the guys when they get ready too. They don’t take quite as long, but do
plan time for us to meet with them prior to the ceremony as well.
Ceremonies can take place anywhere....a church, a garden, your reception location. No matter where
it is, we have to follow whatever rules we are given. Some places are very strict, while others don't really
care what we do.
Talk to your officiant or wedding planner prior to see if they have any special rules for us.
Family formals typically take place following the ceremony. Make sure everyone sticks around that needs
to be in these photos! Sometimes, we use up a lot of our time searching for someone who has already taken off.
It is best to photograph immediate family at this time, and save others for the reception.
We don’t know who is important. We really want to, but we meet a lot of people on a wedding day.
If you want a portrait with someone, you have to let us know and we will be happy to do it!
Scout locations for formals between the ceremony and the reception. Allow us enough time to make
some beautiful portraits (that’s why you hired us, right?). Keep in mind travel time (especially if we
are in Pittsburgh on a Friday night...) and time it will take to get the crew together and in the limo.
Pinterest is great, as a reference tool. It would be nearly impossible to re-create a whole Pinterest
board. Be realistic, and remember that adequate time is necessary to make magic. If we don’t have
enough time, you will get just the standard poses we have to get, and maybe not the creative shots
you hired us because of.
Keep your limo driver one step ahead of the game!
Ahhhh, this is what you’ve been waiting for..the party. Can I tell you how important your DJ is? He is the
one who will keep this party going, the one who will keep you on track with your timeline. Please, please
talk to your DJ, make sure he knows what you want and knows how to handle a crowd. Make sure you
like them as a person. Super important.
If you are going to do any special dances, let us know. We want to be in the right place with the right
lens when you and dad bust into the Wobble.
Oh, we like to eat. Please feed us or provide us time to leave the venue to have a meal.
If your photographer comes to you excited about the sunset, go with them. Sunsets go away in minutes.
I have just barely missed a sunset more than I like to admit...and it makes me sad. I love sunsets and skies,
they will always be different than yesterday’s or tomorrow’s.
Night shots are amazing. Do them. Please.
And a few other things to pass on:
Your dress will get dirty. It’s just gonna happen.
Your day will fly by. You will feel overwhelmed and rushed. Try to enjoy the moment as it is happening.
This is your special day. You have spent so much time and energy planning and dreaming of this day.
Be in the moment, be yourself, love your day.
Don’t be afraid to stray from tradition if it doesn’t fit who you are.
Print your pictures! Wedding albums are sooo worth it!
